a Poem by Raquel Swann

I used to sit

By an open window

In the summer

With my hand

Nestled under my chin

Listening intently.

Out of the sweltering heat

I heard a soft melody

In the distance.

I scurried into the next room

My face filled with panic

My mother’s warm smile

Comforted me

As she reached

Into her purse

And handed me a dollar.

The sweet music reaches crescendo

And I run outside

Others gather

Waiting for anything

That strikes their fancy

On such a hot summer’s day.

The ice cream truck has arrived.
