Absent

a Poem by Raquel Swann

On my last day,

In my final hours,

I examined the crowed room,

Looking for you, and you, and you, and you.

But instead, I discovered the unexpected,

New friendships forged in the bottom of empty glasses,

Inhibitions cast aside,

Secrets revealed,

Acceptance and smiles

Filled with empathy

And compassion.

I’ll never forget the night

Your absence was required.

Your problems

Caused my solutions.

Left in the desert

Without water

Hanging on a ledge

While foreign hands reached

Out for me and pulled me

To safety.

Does true friendship really exist?

Does time bring us closer?

Or can it happen within moments,

When you least expect it?
